On the morning of June 15, 2025, a tragic aviation accident occurred near Gaurikund in Uttarakhand, India, resulting in the deaths of all seven individuals aboard a helicopter operated by Aryan Aviation. The aircraft, a Bell 407, was en route from the Kedarnath shrine to Guptkashi, part of the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage, when it crashed shortly after takeoff. The helicopter took off from Kedarnath at approximately 5:17 AM local time. Shortly after departure, it encountered severe weather conditions, including dense fog and low visibility, which led to a loss of control. The aircraft crashed into a hillock near Garurchatti, just two kilometers from Kedarnath. Tragically, all seven individuals on board, including the pilot and six passengers, lost their lives. The victims hailed from various states, including Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra .

Upon receiving reports of the crash, rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities were promptly dispatched to the site. The challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions hampered their efforts, but they managed to recover the bodies and transport them to the helipad for identification and further procedures .
Safety Concerns and Regulatory Actions
This crash marks the fifth helicopter-related incident in the Kedarnath region since the beginning of the pilgrimage season in April 2025. Previous incidents have raised alarms about the safety protocols of helicopter operators in the area. In response to these concerns, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had fined Aryan Aviation and four other operators ₹5 lakh each in June 2022 for violations, including non-adherence to maintenance schedules and falsification of logs .
Following the recent crash, the Uttarakhand government has suspended all helicopter services to the Kedarnath Valley until further notice. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident and emphasized that only experienced pilots with extensive training in high-altitude operations will be permitted to fly in the region .

The Char Dham Yatra is a significant religious journey for Hindus, attracting hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually to the sacred shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
